Spotlight on Volunteerism
Julebrus

Last year, Sons of Norway lodges hosted thousands of volunteer projects in their communities. This is a great achievement for Sons of Norway and everyone should be proud. However in 2012, with your help, we can do more while helping additional communities! From delivering meals to the elderly to reading stories at a local school, every community has a lot of volunteer opportunities; all you have to do is find them. Then, by connecting your lodge to those opportunities and volunteering with fellow members you can have a lot of fun while making a positive and lasting contribution in the community.

Leif Ericson Day

2012 01 31
Bill C-387. Introduction and first reading
Mr. Peter Julian (Burnaby—New Westminster, NDP) moved for leave to introduce Bill C-387, An Act to establish Leif Erikson Day.
He said: Mr. Speaker, as is well known, Canada has been greatly enriched by the contributions of Canadians who have come from Scandinavian countries such as Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland. They have come and have settled across the country and helped build the Canada we know today. We celebrate that diversity.
My bill would create a Leif Erikson day on October 9. It would honour the contributions of those hundreds of thousands of Canadians of Scandinavian origin who, from coast to coast to coast, have helped contribute to the growth and building of this nation.
In other parts of the world, such as the United States, October 9 is already seen as Lief Erikson day, a day that honours the contribution of those of Scandinavian heritage who have settled in those countries. Therefore, I believe very strongly that the petitions that have been submitted in the House from the thousands of people across the country who support this bill also attest to the importance of that honouring.
Therefore, I would like to table this bill to create on October 9 Lief Erikson day in Canada. I hope it will receive support from both sides of the House.
(Motions deemed adopted, bill read the first time and printed)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JANUARY 31, 2012
NDP BILL WOULD CREATE LEIF ERIKSON DAY
OTTAWA – Peter Julian, MP (Burnaby-New Westminster) today reintroduced a Private Member’s Bill in the House of Commons, Bill C-387, An Act to establish Leif Erikson Day, which would designate the 9th of October of each year as “Leif Erikson Day”.
“The Bill is the next step to honour the symbol of Leif Erikson, a son of Scandinavia, who represents an enduring legacy of brave explorers who continue to enrich Canada’s culture and way of life. This bill has been receiving tremendous support from the Canadian Scandinavian community across Canada”, said Julian.
On April 4, 2006 Julian first tabled a motion calling on the House of Commons to “honour the historical voyage made by Leif Erikson, who became the first European to visit North America over 1,000 years ago, and recognize the contributions of Scandinavian peoples from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland to Canada, by joining other nations in declaring October 9 as Leif Erikson Day in Canada.
The motion was supported by Scandinavian organizations across the country. The US Congress also approved on September 2, 1964, October 9 of each year as "Leif Erikson Day."
“Leif Erikson is part of our heritage that defines us as a nation.  Understanding our history and the people from around the world who shaped it is an important part of reflecting on the great privilege and responsibility we all share as Canadians.” It’s time that the federal government recognize the significance of Leif Erikson and the very fine contribution of Canadians of Scandinavian descent to our society and country.

DISTRICT #7 Heritage Camp 2011

Sunshine, culture and Vikings! What did you do this summer? About 120 Sons of Norway members, Heritage members and their friends spent five days camping in the beautiful Fraser Valley learning about Norwegian culture and hanging out with ‘real’ Vikings!
Heritage Camp was held, once again, at the Sons of Norway Country Club in Hatzic, BC (just east of Mission). This year classes in rosemaling, hardangersom, woodcarving, folk dancing and Norwegian language were offered to the adult participants, and a full program of traditional and contemporary activities and classes including folk dancing, Norwegian language,  rosemaling, and other activities were offered to children ages 4 to 15 years of age.
Flag raising ceremony
Sleipner Lodge #8 greeted everyone on Wednesday night with a social to kick off the camp during registration. The camp program began on Thursday morning with flag raising and singing of the three anthems: Canada, Norway and The United States of America, followed by announcements and then classes that lasted until 3:00 in the afternoon (with coffee breaks and a break for lunch).  (The same program was followed on Friday.) During the afternoon, special camp activities were offered with time available for everyone to take advantage of the beautiful swimming pool before suppertime. On Thursday afternoon, there was a ‘water fight’ for people of all ages! On Friday afternoon Varden Lodge #19 provided a fun filled egg toss and hot dog event.
There was a horseshoe tournament in the evening Thursday, and a special memorial ceremony by the Vikings on Friday evening to remember those who have passed on. Each day always ended with a flag lowering ceremony.
Saturday afternoon featured a car rally, a memorial soccer tournament in honour of Jarrid Mosdell, and a BBQ dinner, which was followed with a party.  The camp ended with a pancake breakfast Sunday morning.
Tore Pettersen, Past International Director, in the egg toss with 2 year old Benjamin Folster of Varden Lodge.
The weather was beautiful for the entire camp, and everyone had a wonderful time!  Next year make sure that you and your family are there!  This is the best Norwegian immersion experience in all of B.C., and perhaps in all of Sons of Norway!
Where else can a boy`s dream to meet a real Viking come true!  Ethan Delicato, Varden Lodge Heritage member, discovered a group of Vikings when he went to camp this year!
